About the “Gina Bachauer

Hamburg Steinway D House Piano

This piano was originally on stage in the English city of Hull. The city was bombed during WWII, but the piano managed to survive unscathed. After the war, as the city was being rebuilt many famous pianists donated their talents to play for the people of Hull to help them heal. There is a long list of musicians who played this piano, most notably Benjamin Britten and Gina Bachauer.

We rebuilt this piano around 2003 and used it for concert rentals and recordings. It appeared on many famous stages and was played by all of the famous pianists who came through Klavierhaus including Richard Goode, Angela Hewitt, Garrick Ohlsson and Andras Schiff who used it as his touring piano for three years. Vladamir Horowitz's concert technician played it and said he had never seen such a perfect piano.

The ‘Bachauer Steinway D and I have had a relationship that spans over a decade and a half. Over the years, my bond with this glorious instrument has only grown stronger, as it exhibits tonal characteristics essential to my musicianship. Its ravishing tone palette and exciting dynamic range confer a symphonic stature to the piano, making the Bachauer a highly desirable instrument for both concert halls and studio recordings. I personally find the lyrical depth of this piano truly reminiscent of the Golden Age of music-making, which is so dear to me!
